La Riojana and Biodynamic Wine

As part of our commitment to sustainable and responsible winemaking and integral to our desire to produce more wines without any chemical intervention, we embarked on a project in July 2017 to produce our own biodynamic wines.

We assigned 13 hectares in our Federada vineyard to biodynamic production and 3 years later, in 2020, we harvested our first Demeter-certified biodynamic grapes. Since then, we have expanded our Demeter-certified biodynamic surface area from 13 to over 130 hectares, which includes vineyards, olive trees and alfalfa for the sheep and makes La Riojana the winery with the largest surface area in Argentina certified for biodynamic production.

In terms of our biodynamic wine offering, we have created Rayo de Luna (translated from Spanish as Moon Beam) which is not only Biodynamic but also Fairtrade certified and comprises a range of wines which receive a unique energy from the moon beams which spill over the vines in our Federada vineyard. An energy which is preserved by our winemakers through their careful observation of the monthly lunar cycle in their daily agricultural tasks in the vineyard.
